The Right Hydraulic Oil Can Make a Difference.

AMSOIL formulates a hydraulic oil for just about any operating condition.

Although easy to miss, hydraulic systems are everywhere; without them life would become very difficult. Hydraulic systems may be as simple the floor jack in your garage or as complex as a crane. From machines and earth movers helping Sioux Falls to expand as a city to high dollar or vintage farm equipment out on the range.  Systems can be mobile, travel many miles to worksites, or others which spend their entire service life in one spot on a factory floor. Regardless of the type of system, they all operate in a similar fashion using the same types of parts. The hydraulic oil plays an important role in the health of each of these components and the overall smoothness and efficiency of the system.

Reservoir – The reservoir is simply the tank that holds the oil. On its way through the system the oil will spend a short period of time here. In that time, the oil has a quick opportunity to release air that’s gotten into the system so it doesn’t contribute to sluggish operation. All AMSOIL hydraulic oils have excellent air-release characteristics, maximizing this important benefit of the reservoir. Another important function is to allow water to separate from the oil, allowing it to be drained. This is obviously most important for systems with larger reservoirs where draining can be accomplished easily.

Pump – The oil can’t be too thick when the machine starts in cold conditions. If it is, there’s a chance the pump will be damaged. On the flip side the oil can’t get too thin when the machine hits its highest operating temperature or excessive wear and poor performance can be expected. To ensure the viscosity remains within the system’s limits you can do one of two things. First, you could change to lighter or heavier oil depending on the conditions or, second, you could use a multi-viscosity oil to cover all the bases. The easiest way to identify oils that resist thinning and thickening is the viscosity index (VI). Oils with high viscosity indices resist viscosity changes with temperature far better than those with low VI. This fact can often save customers the expense and hassle of changing from lighter to heavier oil to meet the conditions. Most oil companies provide the VI number on their product data sheets.

Hoses and seals – Hydraulic oil must not chemically damage seal or hose material and should condition these materials to extend their service life.

Valves – Hydraulic valves are very close-tolerance items and even the smallest amount of varnish or dirt can cause them to bring a key piece of equipment to a halt. Keeping dirt out is simply a matter of good maintenance practices, but preventing varnish is pretty much up to the oil. Varnish occurs when oil breaks down under high-heat conditions. Just being synthetic helps AMSOIL hydraulic oils resist this breakdown, but we go beyond that with our HV Series Hydraulic Oil. These products are high-VI, multi-viscosity oils built with the ability to combat varnish formation. The product data page includes a graphic example of some high-temperature testing we’ve done against conventional oil.

Actuator – The actuator is the component that does the work. Everything else in the system is there to power and control it. As stated before, the common actuators are cylinders or hydraulic motors. How well they do their work often depends on the proper viscosity of the oil, so the same benefits that a mulit-viscosity provides for pumps are true for actuators. Now that I’ve covered the very basics of common components we’ll spend a little time on two of the most popular hydraulic oils we offer.

AMSOIL Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/ Transmission Oil (ATH) serves two functions simultaneously. It’s designed to provide correct frictional characteristics for transmissions and wet brakes while performing as a premium synthetic hydraulic oil. It is used in many types of popular mobile machinery and provides excellent all-weather capability. That means the equipment that operates smoothly moving gravel around the farm in the summer will perform just as well removing snow in the winter without changing the hydraulic oil. This, coupled with premium wear protection, adds up to savings for the customer.

AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil has a solid track record of success. It exhibits high performance near the Arctic Circle as well as the hottest parts of the Deep South. Our Dealers have found a home for it in oil rigs, on ships, in mobile equipment and in large industrial applications throughout the U.S. and Canada. Not only does it provide all the benefits of multi viscosity oil, its unique ability to fight varnish formation has made customers happy by protecting high-value, critical systems.

Ford EcoBoost Challenge – AMSOIL Only Oil Choice

Ford EcoBoost

Ford EcoBoost Engines – Turbocharged, High Heat Efficiency needs a 100% Synthetic

In a previous Facebook post on the Sioux Falls page, I mentioned the merits of the 1.0 3-cyl EcoBoost engine but there are several more popular and practical versions in the other vehicles Ford offers. All of these are the most impressive works ever developed by Ford. The overall design of the powerful six’s with the excellent flow of the internal exhaust manifolds to turbo (low inertia twin units) make engine warm-up fast while achieving the most power per cubic inch ever known. There are challenges however making our AMSOIL Signature Series a must for long life and low maintenance.

There are blends and “fully” synthetic products recommended by Ford but with AMSOIL you know you get a TRUE 100% synthetic which can stand up to the heat (beyond what this engine can generate actually) for any amount of time while resisting formation of deposits in your turbo’s lines. AMSOIL leads the industry with the lowest volatility thus less chance for oil vapors being drawn into combustion via PCV and what does get drawn in has less of a chance to leave deposits on the scorching hot intake valves. Also should the driver fail to change oil at the proper recommended interval, AMSOIL has you covered!!

Ford has positioned a “specially developed” version of Castrol called Magnatech but after examining the overall merits it still doesn’t address long term deposits. Castrol doesn’t make any claims to be a true 100% synthetic (They use the term Fully Synthetic which is common for Group IIIs) nor are there any viscosity retention tests. As a AMSOIL customer first and a dealer 2nd, I trust AMSOIL even more hearing from those who work in the windpower industry that AMSOIL has revolutionized their return on investment and all the severe issues with the Castrol product. According to them, AMSOIL provides the only lubricant to solve a serious viscosity retention issue which others have not. This method of solving problems over stockholder profits allows their products to be years ahead in technology and performance. The Signature Series addresses these issues with the EcoBoost even years before there was a need.

Ford EcoBoost

No warranty issues with the Signatures Series as long as you use the proper viscosity. But should anything happen AMSOIL backs their products 100% with their own guarantee and complete satisfaction. No other lubricant company comes close to this type of protection..
Lastly The #1 reason to use AMSOIL’s Signature Series (5W-30, 5W-20 or 0W-20 per your owners manual) is simply for the performance!! There is a difference. It’s in the base stocks and additive packages and it’s constantly being verified and improved. A difference you can feel and an additional load off of the internal parts at all temperatures under all loads. And many synthetic do leave deposits. Not Signature Series. It’s not a Group III base. If a OEM had a duplicate product it would have to be generally around $15 retail per quart to satisfy typical markups needed.

Sioux Falls Ford owners – We want to be your oil for max performance in these exceptional engines! Don’t settle for dealership…

With the EcoBoost and other engines utilizing the gasoline direct injection there’s an additional issue with the intake side of the intake valves concerning cleanliness. As fuel is sprayed directly into the quench area, it bypasses the whole intake manifold and top side of the intake valves thus allowing debris and varnish from the combination of intake dirt and oil vapor from PCV. Ford mechanics have said Ford is working on a solution to this problem but have yet to publish anything on the matter. They warn to not try to spray or apply anything under warranty so we will update this blog when the time comes.
In the mean time only AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30, 5W-20 and 0W-20 has the lowest volatilityin the industry. In fact AMSOIL was the first company to use the NOACK Volatility test as a standard to go by. This guarantees the lowest amount of crankcase oil vapor being sucked back through the intake system through PCV.

The authorized mechanic referenced in the video below suggests the use of a catch-can once warranty is complete. It will prevent more buildup on these sensitive parts.

Thank you again for reading my AMSOIL blog. I’m Ches Cain with The Synthetic Warehouse. Hope you visit the Sioux Falls store and try out all the products in all of your equipment. Ask for a catalog and be sure to get a coffee mug when you buy a case of any oil!!

Extreme Cold – No problem for AMSOIL Synthetic Engine Oils

Start Your Winter Mornings – and Your Vehicle – with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants

John Baker |Jan 14, 2015 8:46:00 AM

Long before coming to work at AMSOIL, I owned an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera that refused to start on below-zero mornings. I blamed it first on the battery and then on the car itself. “It must be a lemon,” I reasoned.

Cold Temperature Protection
Turns out it was probably the dirt-cheap conventional motor oil I used in those days. Unfortunately, there was no friendly AMSOIL Dealer in my neighborhood to teach me that conventional oils contain paraffins (wax) that can thicken in the cold enough to prevent the crankshaft from turning fast enough to start the car.

The Cold Crank Simulator (CCS) Viscosity Test is one method of testing a lubricant’s cold-flow properties. The test is used to determine the internal fluid friction in motor oils with a “W” grade designation. It measures the amount of energy required to overcome the resistance present in a lubricant that has been collected at temperatures from 23°F (-5° C) to as low as -31°F (-35°C), depending upon the anticipated SAE “W” classification of the oil being tested.

The CCS Viscosity Test simulates an engine’s ability to turn over at cold temperatures. Gauges monitor rotations per minute, amperage draw and motor input. A universal motor is run at a constant voltage to drive a rotor, which is closely fitted inside a stator and immersed in the test oil. The viscosity of the oil at the given test temperature determines the speed of the rotor and amperage draw; thicker oil results in slower speed and more amperage drawn. Speed and amperage drawn are then converted to centipoise (cP).

CCS results showing a lower cP number indicate lower viscosity. Oils that are thicker at low temperatures (high cP number) tend to exhibit more resistance and require more energy to pump and circulate and display a higher cP number on the CSS test. A higher cP number at a given temperature is directly correlated to a greater amount of energy required to turn an engine over, and it also indicates a greater potential for starting difficulties. Most importantly, CCS results suggest a lubricant’s ability to be circulated at a given temperature and its ability to provide wear protection.

As seen in the graph, AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil outperformed several leading synthetic motor oils in a CCS test.

AMSOIL versus others in cold flow properties

Solve oil starvation at start-up

Extreme cold can cause conventional motor oil, transmission fluid and gear lube to thicken, starving vital moving parts of necessary lubrication. In many cases, thick motor oil will prevent vehicles from starting. Cold, thick transmission fluid results in delayed or sluggish shifts and inadequate protection for bearings, valves and other critical parts. Thick gear lube, meanwhile, requires more energy to turn the gears, reducing fuel efficiency. Because gears and bearings in the axle housing are splash-lubricated, conventional gear lubes that are too thick at cold temperatures can starve internal components of lubrication, which can cause excessive wear and premature failure.

Conventional petroleum lubricants thicken because they often contain paraffins (wax). While modern refining techniques remove most of the wax from petroleum oil, some wax-like molecules remain. These wax-like molecules are soluble at ambient temperatures above freezing, but crystallize into a honeycomb-like structure at lower temperatures and cause circulation problems. At startup, this can leave working parts unprotected while the lubricant warms to a temperature that allows it to flow.

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants (http://oilordering.com/products/) do not contain paraffins, so they remain fluid in sub-zero temperatures. Watch the video to see what happens when AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil (http://syntheticwarehouse.net/home/featured-products/signature-series-5w-30-synthetic-motor-oil) and a conventional oil are cooled to -40º. While the conventional oil fails to flow from the beaker, Signature Series remains fluid and delivers 36% easier and faster cold starts*. This means it can reach vital components faster, providing more immediate engine protection and reduced wear.

Berkey Water Filters – In Stock

Black Berkey™ Purification Elements are more powerful than any other gravity filter element currently available. The Elements have a unique purification capability that is due to their unique structure. The micro- pores within the Black Berkey® Elements are so small that viruses and pathogenic bacteria are simply not able to pass through them.

In addition to AMSOIL products, we also carry the Berkey water purifiers for the Sioux Falls area. There are several other products we will be adding but as important as our water is, too often it’s taken for granted or overlooked. Water filtration should be everyone’s top concern.  You should never depend or drink the tap water w/o subsequent filtration.

Read up on Berkey Water Filters. You’ll never want to live without one!

Secondary water filtration is necessary for good health and it doesn’t have to be anything difficult or expensive. Also I could do a blog on just the issues with the water alone but I am assuming you already know that and are ready to take the next step.

To totally clean/filter the water it cannot be thoroughly done at the rate in which a whole house system passes water nor can small inline filters be relied on (Those which supply ice machines or refrigerator fountains) unless they are quite an expensive system which very few to that level exist. Only gravity systems can filter to the level which even the worse case water can be made drinkable as well as other nano-particles which aren’t easily removed otherwise.

People also want to remove the chlorinated combinations (Berkey Shower filters) as well as the harmful fluoride. Berkey addresses this.

I use the Travel Berley whenever we camp or are traveling for more than a couple days. At work I have a Berkey Light and at home we use a Royal Berkey. For motorcyclists try the “Go Berket Kit” which is great for camping in remote areas or even for the typical well water found at most campgrounds away from high populated areas. A great gift for the office break room!

Many water filters on the market may claim to be a water purifier, but do not meet the performance specifications required for this classification. In order to be classified as a water purifier, a water treatment device must remove at least 99.9999% of pathogenic bacteria and reduce viruses by 99.99%. The Black Berkey® Purification Elements can be classified as water purifiers because they remove 99.9999999% of pathogenic bacteria and 99.999% of viruses, which greatly exceeds the standard. The Black Berkey®Purification Element formulation has been tested by State and EPA accredited laboratories to exceed NSF/ANSI Standard 53.

The Black Berkey™ Purification Elements have been tested and confirmed to remove or greatly reduce the contaminants listed below:
