Outstanding Protection for Ford* Power Stroke* Engines

Ford Motor Company recently released its position on the upcoming new API CK-4 and FA-4 diesel oil specifications, claiming it will only recommend diesel oils that meet the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification or oils formulated specifically for the previous API CJ-4 specification.

Questions have arisen regarding why Ford would condemn use of CK-4 and FA-4 products in its Power Stroke engines. According to Ford Service Lubricant Technical Expert Ron Romano, “6.7L engines tested on CK-4 and FA-4 formulations had experienced valve train wear not encountered with CJ-4 formulations.” The CJ-4 formulations contained more than 1,000 parts per million phosphorus, an effective antiwear ingredient, while some CK-4 and FA-4 formulations were below that threshold. As a result, Ford declared that it has wear concerns about the use of CK-4 and FA-4 formulations with less than 1,000 ppm phosphorus in new and older Ford engines.

With the exception of AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil, all the new AMSOIL diesel oils provide boosted levels of phosphorus, are recommended for the Ford 6.7L engine and will carry the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification. We have no concerns whatsoever that new Signature Series 5W-30 Diesel Oil will meet the wear protection requirements for the Ford 6.7L engine; however, we are choosing not to include the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification and the 6.7L engine application on this product. Ford has identified a minimum phosphorus level, and Signature Series 5W-30 is below that minimum. Once the 6.7L engine test becomes available (today, it is not yet ready), we will demonstrate the superior wear protection of Signature Series 5W-30 in the Ford 6.7L engine. AMSOIL Dealers and customers can be well-assured that all Ford Power Stroke engines, no matter the model year, are well-protected when using AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils.

Diesel Oil Selection Guide

Diesel Oil Selection Sioux FallsAMSOIL Diesel Oil Selection Guide

From a “one size fits all” to synthetic oils to match specific needs.

The diesel oil selection here often causes some confusion because they are made for different purposes and the value of one may depend on the use of the truck or the year model. So here I have listed some things about each for you to consider in your decision making process.
As diesel trucks both light duty and commercial OTR are quite the financial investment, always refer to the individual product data bulletin found by using the link to the PDF at the bottom of each product page for more specific information. Please call me at 605-274-2580 with further questions.

Generally the AMSOIL Diesel oils can be categorized in two groups: Longest OEM interval or Premium Extended Interval. These days Sioux Falls drivers can really put on the miles and AMSOIL’s Synthetic Diesel Oils can increase your drain intervals up to three times longer.

AMSOIL Corporate’s #1 Pick
I’ll start with the one one premium product compatible for all diesels – all years – The Premium 100% CJ4. Available in both 5W-40 (DEO) and 15W-40 (DME) this industry leading anti-wear diesel oil lasts up to 3X longer OEM intervals (per notes on package) and offers maximum protection. For more information on this important addition to the industry please visit the specific pages linked above.
Most customers buying AMSOIL are enthusiasts and only buy the premium products thus why this one is becoming the best seller on its merits. Primarily it’s ability to withstand the fuel dilution issues of modern diesel engines equipped with DPF. Dependability and protection when it’s needed.

Older Diesels
For those with older diesels who want our legendary high zinc, long life, chose the Diesel and Marine 15W-40 (AME). It’s great for all 2006 and earlier diesels especially those which may suffer from high soot buildup as this formulation can combat deposits. Be sure to first run a couple bottles of AMSOIL Engine Flush (per sump size) so the unneeded acids are neutralized an purged from the crankcase.  The DME 15W-40 is a CI4+ oil. It’s still my best seller. Guaranteed to last up to 3X longer the OEM interval. Awesome for older cars which require high Zinc or ZDDP. I use it in my 1957 Studebaker.

Best Economy for Older Diesels
For the same 2006 and earlier who want the very best in fuel economy and choose to use a lighter viscosity as recommended by the manufacturer the 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel (HDD) 100% Synthetic is the best choice., Product code is (HDD).  I also use this one personally in vintage gas cars which need ha high zinc or ZDDP oil or gasoline engines that have a lot of deposits- this oil’s detergent package is superior to any! But if I had a pre 2007 diesel pick-up this would be my #1 choice. We sell a lot to older Durmax diesels and the Ford 7.3 owners in all climates.

Cost Conscious One Size Fits All (Original Equipment) & for Service Centers
For all diesel owners who are not doing extended intervals but want to use a premium AMSOIL product using the highest quality base-stock, this one is designed to compete on price. Choose the OED 15W-40 Diesel Oil. It meets CJ4 and is also back compatible for all CI4 and earlier specifications. For use in any year diesel new or old. Customers who are going to change oil at the OEM interval but want the  chose between the 15W-40 (OED) or 10W-30 (OEC) you now have a choice. Also popular to those who service diesel vehicles and want one product for all diesel service.

Tractors, Equipment and Fleets
Lastly our original 10W-30/SAE-30 Heavy Duty Diesel which is similar to the AME, High zinc (ZDDP) is generally the choice for work and construction turbo diesels or non-turbo tractors and equipment. Pre 2006 Diesel trucks wanting to use a 10W-30 would select this oil too. Generally the pick for all generators and skid steers as well. CI4 Diesel Specification or earlier.

European Car & Van
Many European diesels call for a diesel/gasoline oil based on specific specifications. For those please see the European Oil Line of products.

Stock up on Winter Cold Flow Additive for your Diesel

Sioux Falls's diesel fuel additive selectionTake advantage of AMSOIL’s cold flow improver here in stock in the Sioux Falls store (12th and G streets). Avoid fuel clouding while keeping your power and economy.

AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow (ACF) combats diesel fuel gelling by improving diesel cold-flow ability. It is formulated with an advanced deicer to enhance fuel flow and help prevent fuel filter plugging in cold temperatures. Diesel Cold Flow is formulated for a broad range of diesel fuels, including biodiesel and #1 and #2 ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). Unlike all-in-one fuel additives that may sacrifice performance in specific areas in the name of convenience, AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow makes no sacrifices; it is purpose-built for diesel owners who demand maximum results.

Treat Rate:

Just two ounces for every five gallons of fuel!

Reduces Need for #1 Diesel Fuel

Using #1 diesel fuel is one traditional solution to cold-weather diesel fuel problems. While #1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low-temperature operability, the energy content of #1 diesel fuel is about 95 percent that of #2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and less horsepower. In addition, the kerosene used in #1 diesel fuel provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel injectors, increasing the likelihood for wear. AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower-quality #1 diesel fuel, helping to maintain fuel economy and keep engines functioning normally.

Helps Prevent Gelling

As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to crystallize. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low-quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40ºF (4ºC), most fuels have a cloud point near 32ºF (0ºC). The point at which the crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow lowers the CFPP by up to 20ºF (15ºC) in ULSD.

Additional Benefits of Diesel Cold Flow

AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow uses a jet-fuel-type deicer that disperses water to control ice formation throughout the fuel system. It inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel pour point as much as 58ºF (32ºC), allowing fuel to flow to the engine more easily and improving diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures.

AMSOIL’s Cold Flow improver is also available available in a combination bottle of our award winning Diesel Injector Clean fuel additive so if you are not treating your diesel fuel with a lubricant and cleaner this one will keep you covered. Please read more about our top selling diesel fuel cleaner fuel additive (AMSOIL ADF) maintenance product which you MUST use to keep your injectors clean and free from severe and costly wear.

If refiners make changes to diesel fuel in winter months, why do cold flow improvers need to be used?

During cold weather months, fuel refiners produce a #1 diesel fuel that flows more readily in colder temperatures. Some refiners also produce a product termed a winter blend which is a blend of #2, #1 and potentially cold flow improver additives. Fuel varies significantly in different regions, and refiners estimate how low the temperature will actually drop in these regions. Depending on the fuel source and temperature mix, fuel directly from gas stations may cause issues with wax formation, preventing vehicles from starting and stalling while on the road.

From Wikipedia
Using these guidelines gas stations offer “winter ready diesel” for sale to the Motorist – there are two ways to achieve this:

  • winter blend – the gas station has blended the No.2 diesel with No.1(kerosene) by some percentage.
  • winterized diesel – the No.2 diesel has been treated with additives by the diesel supplier.

As the treatment with additives (1:40000[35]) is a cheaper way to enhance No.2 fuel in winter, most stations offer winterized diesel in cold weather conditions. In regions with colder weather, most gas stations offer No.1 fuel at the same pump allowing drivers to decide for themselves on a winter blend.

Always inquire at your local diesel fuel stop the version or their knowledge of the state of Winter diesel or blended fuel at their locality. The AMSOIL product will enhance that limit another 20 degrees.
